Texas History Badge Workshop for Cub Scouts

This workshop is open to Cub Scouts and complements the Texas Badge curriculum. Scouts will tour the 1823 Old Place and learn about Texas pioneers’ laborious lifestyle and jump forward in time to the 1905 Staiti House and appreciate innovation. Scouts and parents will also enjoy learning about 92 years of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and get an understanding of preserving cowboy and cowgirl skillsets and culture that defines our great state. Snacks and a drink are included.

All Badge objectives will be met - State Symbols, State History, and State Culture.

The Heritage Society, 1100 Bagby Street, Free parking at 212 Dallas Street.

Scouting Badge Workshop: Texas History

BOY SCOUTS AND GIRL SCOUTS ARE WELCOME TO LEARN ABOUT TEXAS HISTORY! WE DO HAVE A REQUEST TO COVER A CUB SCOUTS BADGE FOR THIS WORKSHOP.

Dates for Cub Scouts (Grades 2 - 5):

  • Saturday, May 6, 10 AM PM – Noon  

Tour and activity led by Martha Whiting-Goddard, a descendant of Reverend Jack Yates.

Popcorn and punch will be served.

Badge Activities: State Symbols • Name the state bird, flower, and motto. • Sing or recite the words of “Texas, Our Texas.” State History • Texas has been part of six countries. Name them, and tell at least two of the major events that occurred in Texas while part of each country. • Name a famous Texan. Tell why this person is famous and what you like or dislike about this person. • Visit an historical place in Texas. Tell about the important events that happened there. State Culture • Read a story about any Texas subject (fiction or non-fiction). Tell what you learned from the story. • Find out about the American Indians who lived near your community at any time. Tell about some of their history and customs.

February is Black History Month, and March is Women’s History Month and Texas History Month.  Come explore all three months in one badge workshop that includes historic house tours and a museum gallery filled with all things Texas.

Dates for Scouts (Grades 2 - 5):

  • Sunday, March 5, 1 – 3 PM  

Tour and activity led by Martha Whiting-Goddard, a descendant of Reverend Jack Yates and Rae Bryant of The Houston Genealogical Forum and the Houston Suffragists Project.

Popcorn and punch will be served.

Popcorn and punch will be served. Small smores maker is available if you would like to bring ingredients to make smores at the end of the activities.
